About the Artist

Harold Bartram (1928–2022) was a British graphic designer, educator and interior designer associated with the post-war modernist movement in British typography and print design. Having studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London under Anthony Froshaug and Herbert Spencer, Bartram went on to teach at the London School of Printing, later becoming Senior Lecturer in Design. Alongside his teaching career, he produced commercial design work for organisations including Shell, British Railways and the National Union of Teachers, and designed the 1963 British Red Cross Centenary Congress postage stamps. He was also known for redesigning the interior of London’s Prince Charles Cinema between 1968 and 1969, bringing a distinctly modernist approach to the space. Bartram’s work reflects the clarity, restraint and functional elegance associated with mid-century British graphic design, and he remains connected to an important generation of designers who shaped post-war visual culture in Britain.
