The print shows the aftermath of violence. In profile, the subject lurches backwards - his sleeve torn and ripped away by a bullet. His hands are pressed forward, presenting a vulnerability reminiscent of Christ’s wounds. The print only depicts the figure, placing a striking emphasis on his wounding, and his heroic individuality. A similar print, titled The Pioneer, is held by the National Gallery of Scotland. Both form studies for the illustrated account of his battalion’s action that Lawrence contributed to post-war.

About the Artist

Alfred Kingsley Lawrence (1893–1975)
Born in Sussex in 1893, he studied at the Royal College of Art under William Rothenstein. Like many artists of his generation, the Great War interrupted his studies; he joined the Tyneside Pioneers, serving within the Northumberland Fuisiliers. Seeing action at Bray and the Somme, he later illustrated the official account of his Battalion’s service.

Lawrence would go on to become a member of the Royal Academy in 1938. During the Second World War, he served as a war artist, once again depicting his nation at war. His works are held in a number of collections, including the V&A, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Scotland, and - very close to home - Fife Council.
