Over the Waves (with sweet Faith at the helm)
Over the Waves (with sweet Faith at the helm)
Artist: The circle of Joseph Noel Patton
Date: 1869
Medium: Pencil on Paper
Paper size: 23cm by 28.3cm
Clearly influenced by the style of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, this unique work depicts two figures sailing across a body of water in a small boat, and is accompanied by a four line handwritten poem. It is also signed and dated - seemingly by the artist - on the lower right of the paper. The poem reads as follows:
Over the waves - when the night curtains fall.
Deepning the gloom - till fears' shadows appal.
Over the waves - with sweet Faith at the helm.
Bright visions rising dark thoughts to o'erwhelm.
