Description

Oil on Canvas. Painted c. 1940. Framed.

The frame features an exhibition label on the reverse, naming Barbara Jorgensen and dated to May 20th 1932 - it is likely, however, that the frame was simply reused from an earlier piece, potentially the unfinished portrait that is on the reverse of the canvas.

Framed size: 60.7 x 50.6 cm

About the Artist

Barbara Jorgensen studied at Salisbury Art School before winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy, where she received a silver award for drawing. She studied for many years under Graham Sutherland and Bernard Adams.

In 1934 she married Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Campbell Westmoreland (1894–1972). Westmoreland was a regular officer in the Hampshire Regiment, who in 1940 was commanding the 1st Battalion. Having been based in Palestine, they were then moved to Egypt. The portrait dates from this period, and is a rare early figure painting by the artist.

In 1963 she married again, becoming the second wife of Bernard Thomas Brassey, 2nd Baron Brassey of Apethorpe (1905–1967). In later life, as Barbara, Lady Brassey, she turned to landscape painting, exhibiting in Britain, the USA, and South Africa.
