Description

George Dance (1741 - 1825). 1800. Engraving on paper. Framed.

As part of a broader goal of improving the Port of London, George Dance presents an ambitious design for a double bridge over the Thames. Throughout the second half of the eighteenth century, trade into London had rapidly expanded - with coastal trade doubling and international trade tripling. Rapid expansion and improvement was thus required, with George Dance presenting a number of proposals to House of Commons select committees.

Beyond such practical considerations, however, Dance maintains a strong patriotic focus. Union Flags decorated with the cypher of George III fly. Equestrian figures guard the bridges, flanking either side of a monumental column that rises above the buildings behind.
